This sweet, creamy, and chilly pick-me-up is a great way to get your caffeine fix on a hot day. It includes a ‘snow cap’ of sweetened condensed milk that really ties the whole scrumptious treat together. You can customize further with your personal favorite roast and variety of coffee and flavored syrup.

Ingredients:

Shaved Ice

Cold Brew Concentrate

1 Cup Sugar

½ Cup Water

1 tsp. Vanilla Extract (or other flavor extract as desired)

Half and Half

Sweetened Condensed Milk

To Make the Cold Brew Concentrate:

  • Combine 1 Cup coarsely ground coffee with 2 Cups cold water in a plastic or glass container. Seal tightly, shake the mixture well, and refrigerate for at least 12 hours.
  • Before using, pour the mixture through a fine strainer or cheesecloth to remove the coffee grounds. Keep chilled until ready to use.

To Make the Syrup:

  • Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved. Remove from the heat and add the vanilla or other flavoring. Cool completely and chill before using.

To Assemble the Shaved Ice:

  • Shave enough ice to fill your desired glass or mug, with a large mound over the top.
  • In a separate glass, combine 2 parts Cold Brew Concentrate, 1 part flavored syrup, and 1 part half and half. Stir to combine.
  • Pour the coffee mixture over the top of the shaved ice. Drizzle the sweetened condensed milk over the top and serve.

Tips:

Freshly ground coffee beans will give the best flavor for the cold brew concentrate. Don’t grind them too fine, or you’ll end up with a cloudy, slightly gritty mixture that will need lots of straining to be usable. For the flavored syrup, go with whatever flavor you like in your morning coffee, or try something totally new. Hazelnut, almond, chocolate, and Irish cream are all great substitutions – or leave out the flavoring entirely if you’d like the flavor of the coffee to be the star of the show. The cold brew concentrate and syrup can be kept for up to two weeks in sealed containers in the refrigerator.
