Ever since it was brought over by Japanese plantation workers in the early 1900’s, shaved ice has grown to become an inseparable part of Hawaii. And the most iconic Hawaiian shave ice version of all is definitely rainbow. It’s just so photogenic and beautiful!

The flavors of this one are really all up to you – just make sure they’re some combination of red, yellow, and blue syrups. It’s possible to make the syrups yourself from fresh fruits and sugar (here are our favorite natural DIY syrup recipes). To make things as easy as possible, you can also purchase pre-made syrups from Amazon.

Try this recipe with shaved ice in a bowl or cup, or make a classic snow cone with slightly chunkier ice in a snow cone paper cup. Mahalo!

Ingredients:

Red Fruit Syrup (like cherry or strawberry – see syrup recipes here)

Yellow Fruit Syrup (like lemon or pineapple – see syrup recipes here)

Blue Fruit Syrup (any flavor will do, just add blue food coloring to desired shade)

Vanilla or Macadamia Ice Cream (optional)

Preparation:

  • If making shaved ice, place a scoop of ice cream in the bottom of a bowl or cup. Shave the desired amount of ice over the ice cream, or crush the desired amount of ice into a paper snow cone cup.
  • Pour the red syrup over the first third of the ice. Pour the yellow syrup over the center third of the ice, and follow with the blue syrup over the last third of the ice. Overlap the colors slightly to blend them and create new colors. Serve immediately.

Tips:

This recipe looks best with syrups that have been colored with additional food coloring. You can make the desired syrups and color them to your liking, or purchase pre-made colored syrups for more striking colors and flavors.
