So you’ve gotten bitten by the shaved ice bug and want to try making it yourself. I’ve been there too.

One of the most common questions people ask about making shaved ice is what supplies do you need to make it at home? Having the right tools and ingredients will make your shave ice making experience a blast and something you and your family can remember forever. In this article, we will show you the top supplies needed to make great shaved ice.

Must Have Accessories For Making Shaved Ice

Shaved Ice Machine

First, you’re going to need a shave ice machine. We highly recommend the Hawaiian Shaved Ice S900A and it has over 1,300 five start reviews on Amazon who also really seem to like it. It’s easy to get the hang of and we find this is a fantastic shave ice maker for our family. There are TONS of options for shave ice makers though, so we also recommend checking out our article on how to pick the best shave ice machine. In that article we tried to include one that’s right for everyone.

Hawaiian Shaved Ice Starter Kit

In a hurry? To get started as quickly as possible we highly recommend this shave ice starter kit. It’s got all the basics you need and it’s a great value for the money. The quality of the syrups is excellent.

Shave Ice Syrups

Unless you’re planning to make your own syrups, you’re going to need to buy some. After all, shave ice without syrup is just ice. Not that there’s anything wrong with eating plain ice if that’s your thing.

These syrups from Hawaiian Shaved Ice are fantastic and we highly recommend them. They also have nearly 1,000 5 star reviews on Amazon, so we’re not the only one who likes them a lot.

Looking for a pre-made organic shave ice syrup option?  Here is the organic shave ice syrup we recommend.

Natural Wooden Spoons

Sometimes it’s not always possible to wash spoons so have disposable spoons makes things much simpler. Sure, you can buy plastic spoons, but wooden ones are far better for the environment and way more attractive. 100% biodegradable and made from a naturally renewable material, you can feel good about using these spoons.

Compostable Shave Ice Cups

You can always use your kitchen bowls, but disposable bowls do make cleanup much easier. In Hawaii you’ll find that the majority of higher end shave ice shops are moving away from styrofoam and plastic cups and using biodegradable bowls made from post consumer recycled paper or sugarcane fiber. When you’re done with them you can toss them into a compost bin and they’ll naturally decompose. You could also go for the iconic plastic flower shaped shave ice cups, but we don’t recommend them only because they’re not biodegradable and can’t be recycled.

Long Neck Bottles For Syrup

If you’re planning to make your own syrups, or if you’re using natural fruit juices to flavor your shave ice, having proper bottles like these will make it a lot easier to pour neatly. These are especially helpful if you’re making shave ice with kids! To use them properly, you’ll also want to buy our next recommendation…

Bottle Pourers With Tapered Spout

You’ll need these for the long neck syrup bottles. These will make your whole setup look so much more legit.

Stainless Steel Spoon Straws

These things are awesome and since they’re reusable you’ll only have to buy them once! They’re also much better for the environment and work amazing for things like ice cream, frozen yoghurt, and thick smoothies too. There’s a cool article here on how to keep them clean. If you’re looking for a budget option, you can always go with the typical plastic spoon straws. We don’t recommend plastic though since they will never decompose and cannot be recycled.
